Margaret Integrated Mental Health Network

The Margaret River Integrated Mental Health Network (MRIMHN) is a working group established to support and enhance the patient experience and staff wellbeing in the Margaret River Hospital Emergency Department (ED) for mental health and suicide-related presentations.

This initiative builds upon the Emergency Department Suicide Prevention Project, which concluded in March 2024, to address systemic challenges and promote community-based responses to improve outcomes for patients, staff, and the wider mental health consumer network.

Led by Mind-Ed and supported by the Suicide Prevention Coordinators of St John of God Social Outreach, and WA Country Health Service (WACHS), the MRIMHN seeks to implement practical, community-driven solutions and work in partnership with ED staff to support the enhancement of internal WACHS processes while fostering broader improvements in care and communication through improved community support and collaboration.

Purpose

The purpose of MRIMHN is to:

  1. Enhance the Patient Experience
    • Improve systems, responses, information, and care pathways for individuals presenting to ED for mental health or suicide-related concerns.
  1. Support ED Staff Wellbeing
    • Foster improved communication and mutual understanding between ED, wards, other WACHS departments, and community services and organisations.
    • Reduce vicarious trauma and improve staff satisfaction through enhanced internal processes and collaborative community support mechanisms.
  1. Strengthen Community Collaboration
    • Mobilise community-based services (integrated with WACHS staff) to generate, implement, and sustain change initiatives.
    • Foster reciprocal communication between the ED, wards, other WACHS departments and community to address gaps and optimise outcomes for mental health consumers.
    •
